Gubu World is an Irishmans view of global affairs. Gubu is an Irish political phrase that stands for grotesque, unbelievable, bizare and unprecendented. Gubu World is a polictical blog that debates international issues of contention. While keeping an eye on events in Ireland we regularly debate developments in Iraq, Iran, Israel and other troubled spots.
I'm not sure the advert was necessarily insulting Mitt because he spoke French. I took it was inferring that talk was cheap with Mitt given the context of the rest of the ad, although that reading of it might be wrong of course. In any case I think TV adverts that solely make attacks on others should be banned.
I think it is a bad reflection on the Republican party that being able to speak a foreign language is seen as a negative quality. I agree that some of the negative ads are truly cringy and should be banned.
I looked at the video again. It is insulting to the French. The French music is supposed to reflect badly on Mitts as is the remark about him speaking French. Where I disagree is that it doesn't necessarily mean the Republican Party sees speaking a foreign language as a negative thing. The French and Americans have had a good deal of hostility (e.g. Freedom Fries) in recent years so I suppose in this context it suggests he isn't a patriot. I agree though that it doesn't reflect well on Republican support if this advert is to appeal to their base!
I would like to think it is fairly tongue and cheek. But I suppose we on this side of the Atlantic find it difficult to relate to the eccentric nature of these Presidential contests. It's a cultural difference as much as anything else.

Hi Ted,
